Presidential Election Update

The following is a rough draft update for the first update of this term. It's a brief explanation of the recent elections and it's candidates. I'm not exactly sure it's as snappy or snazzy as was requested, but let's see what we can do with it. MinComm out.

It's always exciting and a little scary to see a first time President elected and this most recent election was no different. The Presidency was up for grabs by one of three potential first timers. Each has spent extensive time serving in the Cabinet or Senate. It was a close race, but we have determined our next President. Let's take a closer look at the race, it's participants and the people who made it great: you, the Citizens.

Our first Candidate and victor was none other than Cerian Quilor. Cerian is a long time member of Europeia, having served for just over two years. Cerian had resigned himself to a dead political career within the Region until he was asked to serve as the Minister of Foreign Affairs under President Swakistek. Showing how quickly things can change here in Europeia, he's found himself President of the Region!

Seven Deaths, the next candidate, is now spending his sixth consecutive term in the Cabinet under President Quilor. He's a capable member and undoubtedly experienced, but there was concerns about his activity levels and work ethic when compared to Cerian. In the end, Seven Deaths was glad that he lost to such a worthy opponent and friend.

Notolecta, the final candidate, was a dark horse coming in to this election at almost the last minute. Notolecta is a long time member and Citizen of Europeia and the current Chief Justice. He's known throughout the Region for his gruff attitude and "tell it like it is" line of speech. He would certainly do well as President should he decide to run again.

The first round of elections left us with a 14-14-4 split. Cerian and SD were tied with fourteen and Noto was dropped from the ballot. Run-off elections took place and Cerian was declared the winner with 22 votes to SD's 15. Throughout the campaign, Europeia was abuzz with election fever. Many newspapers conducted pre-election polls and many more citizens questioned their would be Presidents on a variety of issues ranging from activity to CSO reform to the Navy and finally Foreign Affairs.

Now that election fever is beginning to die down, we enter into our Senate By-Elections to fill President Quilor and Vice President Drecq's seats. Everyone is waiting with bated breath. Waiting to see how the new President will do. Will he rise to the occasion and triumph or will he crash and burn, ending his career forever? Only time will tell. Good luck President Cerian Quilor. Your Region stands behind you.

Cool, I'll do a final proofread tonight and when you get your stuff done, we can add it to the bottom and send it out... Saturday? That sounds like a good time.

Either is fine. Whenever you get me the piece we can put it here for a few hours to be proofread and then send it out.

I'm trying to come up with something, but all I can think of are things that just look really stupid or like they'll make me/Europeia look bad.

People who care deeply about this region's internal politics are already here. Our audience is therefore, by definition, people who aren't all that interested in this subject.

The article needs to be much shorter, and written in a reverse-pyramid style such that the salient facts are captured in the first paragraph.

For example:

Electing a first-time President can be scary, but Europeia took the plunge this week, electing Cerian Quilor on two ballots over fellow first-timers Seven Deaths and Notolecta. Cerian and SD tied on the first ballot, with Notolecta running behind. Notolecta’s endorsement and a 48-hour flurry of additional campaigning before the second ballot pushed Cerian over the top by a comfortable 22-15 margin in the decisive second ballot.

Cerian is an active citizen whose political career seemed moribund until he was tapped two terms ago to serve as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In a cordial campaign that focused more on the candidates’ capabilities than on major policy differences, voters ultimately placed more weight on Cerian’s record of consistently high activity than Seven Deaths’ extensive ministerial resume. Notolecta, the region’s current Chief Justice, joined the race late and never gained as much traction as his opponents.

Cerian’s running mate, Drecq, is the new Vice President. Like Cerian, Drecq has served previously in the Senate and Cabinet, but is taking his first turn in high office. Drecq has received high praise this term for his service as Speaker of the Senate.

Under Europeian law, both Cerian and Drecq must resign their Senate seats. The region swiftly held a special election to fill those seats, with Senate rookie Remsol Greyjoy and Europeian veteran and former President PASD emerging victorious.

Looks good.

What are your thoughts about the statement attachment, Skizzy? I'll have something up by the end of the night. My thoughts are: something nice, simple, polite and 'my telegram and PM inbox are open if you have questions for me or Europeia' and a promise to ensure that 'Europeia remains a welcoming, open place for people from across NationStates'.

Heck, what does everyone else think on that?

If you want to distribute a personal greeting (like the one Vinage did) in regions where you have an account and actually log on, say, once a week, I think that's a fine idea.

I don't think it makes sense for our ambassadors to post such an informal greeting in regions where you have no presence. Better just to post the news item in those places.

Actually makes more sense. And the places I log in once a week regularly are regions I hold citizenship in anyway.

Sorry I wasn't on last night, I was too busy crying. I like Skizzy's revised version and agree with her reasoning. Should I post this for dispersal in the OE&A now? Should we also include an updated list of our current Executive and Legislative government?

Can we...not? Or at least spoiler that bit? That's information overload and putting it at the top is an immediate turn-off for people in other regions, IMHO.

Not every reach has the same spoiler tags, but yes, we can do that.

And yes, into the OE&A for distribution it goes.

Last term, I started putting the list of office holders at the bottom of each update. I generally agree with Elias, but putting the info at the bottom at least makes it available for anyone who wants it.

Indeed - I'll be taking that note out of Skizzy's book this term as well.
In the future, so I know, would you rather set up the final product and the thread telling diplomats to send it out or should I?
