Vibonia Annexes Crimson Spire in First Sovereign Frontier Agreement

The changes of the Frontier/Stronghold era rumbled across NationStates once again on Tuesday, November 11th, as Vibonia and Crimson Spire signed the first annexation treaty of two sovereign frontiers, allowing Vibonia to annex Crimson Spire. The treaty, formally named the Treaty of Crimson and Gold, was signed on October 28th, and the process of annexing Crimson Spire into Vibonia began not long after, marking the second-ever significant use of the new annexation mechanic.

Vibonia and Crimson Spire's relationship began a year and a half ago due to strong community overlap and a desire to build friendly ties with fellow frontiers. While both regions faced their challenges, Crimson Spire struggled to maintain activity, leading Vibonia to close its embassy with Crimson Spire as a result. For frontiers, inactivity often leads to compounded issues such as fewer nations spawning in the region due to low RMB post rates, which in turn makes it difficult to secure the region with high endorsement counts. This proved true for Crimson Spire as the region was briefly occupied in a raid led by Sparkalia in May 2025 -- Likely one of the final straws in the calculus to merge into Vibonia.

The entire annexation process was completed rapidly in two weeks, based on regional census data, after Vibonian forces deployed when the treaty was signed on October 28th and Crimson Spire was subsequently annexed on November 11th. The population gains for Vibonia were immediately noticeable as Vibonia's population surged to nearly 1500 nations, up from around 1250, but the WA gains were more marginal, with around 10 Crimson Spire WAs moving over. The sharp disparity between nations and WAs is a reminder for observers that many frontiers have struggled to convert new founds into larger WA populations, raising questions about the update's effectiveness at breaking up feeder hegemony.

The Treaty of Crimson and Gold offers a unique blueprint for the future of annexation by allowing Crimson Spire residents and citizens to retain their status as part of Vibonia and committing Vibonia to integrating the Crimson Spire community into its own. In exchange, Crimson Spire agrees to cede its sovereignty in addition to any onsite or offsite properties, and the remaining gameside region of Crimson Spire will be maintained by Vibonia. A few of these points, particularly the integration of both communities, are commitments that are difficult to quantify, so the EBC reached out to Vibonian President Picairn for more information. Picairn shared that post-annexation "Crimson Spire's Discord server was transferred to Vibonian ownership," and Vibonia "began onboarding Crimson Spire residents into Vibonia's server and integrating them as citizens." The effort proved successful as "former Crimson Spire Delegate Delmond and Internal Security Officer Konsa are now both Vibonian citizens," while Picairn's own endorsements "have recently ballooned to over 80, which places [Vibonia] in the same league as Carcassonne." In general, Picairn said the "integration measures have paid off handsomely so far" in smoothing the transition between regions.

The initial use cases of annexation show a clear desire to use the new feature to make community mergers and absorbing sister regions mechanically easier for regions rather than for long-speculated conquests. The Vibonia-Crimson Spire annexation, as previously mentioned, is the second to occur after the initial annexation of Renascor by Talonia as Talonia consolidated a pseudo-sister region to gain around 300 nations. A third annexation is also underway between UEPU and Council of Asia (CoA) in another merger-type transition, as UEPU has long considered moving to a new region and will therefore merge into CoA as a familiar community. Perhaps in time, annexation will make its way into raiding/defending gameplay. Whether there is an appetite for such gameplay applications remains unclear.

Interesting to see these mechanics at play already! From an admin and moderation standpoint, I'd be curious to see how these off-site property mergers address the merging of administration and moderation teams (if at all)

Are there any lessons we can learn from their integration strategies?

Caveat that I am not 100% certain, but I would suspect because Vibonia is maintaining the gameside region and Crimson Spire discord that they would not fully merge their OOC teams either. The Crimson Spire folks moving over aren't coming with government positions and such so it makes sense to me that they wouldn't necessarily carry over mods/admins either.

One thing that stuck out to me was citizens and residents getting 1:1 status in Vibonia. What happens if you have a potential infiltration actor move over from the annexed region, and now they have all the rights of a citizen? It's perhaps not the most likely scenario, but something to ponder when merging communities.
