To Award or Not to Award: The Second Act
Senate Debates Mousebumples' Ovation
By Lime

In an unexpected speech Friday night, President Calvin Coolidge announced his nomination of Mousebumples to receive an ovation. In his speech, the President spoke of Mousebumples long service to the region in her roles as Citizens’ Assembly (CA) Chair, Minister of Interior, Vice President, President, World Assembly Delegate and Vice Chancellor. He praised her as “as one of the most effective public servants in Europeian history”, described her as accumulating “one of the best reputations a Europeain could” for not just her skills as a leader and bureaucrat but most notable as a “friend.” He stated that no one in Europeia had preached the virtue of kindness more than Mousebumples. The President revealed that it was in honour of Mousebumples that he introduced the Honoured Expansion Act as a Senator, and while the legislation stalled for a time it was eventually passed and signed into law, allowing former citizens to be nominated for ovations.

Many citizens congratulated Mousebumples in response to the President’s announcement, and voiced their support for her ovation. Many also noted that they felt the ovation was long overdue and Mousebumples was highly deserving of the honour. However, despite the perceived public support her nomination has faced a more lukewarm response from the Senate. Speaker Lloenflys began discussion by admitting he was in a “quandary” with the nomination. While he noted that many individuals in the region that he respected believed Mousebumples was an “excellent” candidate for an Ovation, he himself had no past experience with Mousebumples. He argued that while Mousebumples may be worthy of an ovation based on her previous actions, he raised the question of how relevant a former player who left the region several years ago is today. He stated that he was undecided on the nomination and would need more time to think. Senator Darcness made a brief statement on the Senate floor, stating that while the President may have campaigned hard for such a nomination to become reality, he could not “in good conscience take part in these preceedings” and announced his intention to abstain on the nomination.

Senator Kazaman however made clear his support of the nomination saying “Mousebumples has made many contributions to Europeia and we continue to benefit from her labour today.” He argued that Mousebumples still had relevance in today’s Europeia but also argued that an ovation shouldn’t have to have “special relevance” to the present day. He said that while it may be easy to forget previous acts of service, or believe they are no longer pressing that doesn’t mean the act of service no longer has merit or is any less worthy of an award. Senator Sincluda also announced his support for the nomination, arguing that Mousebumples was deserving of the award and had contributed much to the region. He also said he did not believe Mousebumples current activity had any bearing on the nomination, given her previous contributions to the region which he described as being large.

Senator Peeps has yet to make a statement on Mousebumples nomination, however his decision may well be critical in the final vote. A nomination for an ovation must be approved by a 2/3s majority of the Senate, which in the current five-seat Senate is four. However, with Senator Darcness intending to abstain on the vote, this reduces the 2/3s majority required to three. If Speaker Lloenflys were to oppose the nomination, Senator Peeps would have the deciding vote either granting or denying the 2/3s majority required for the nomination to be approved. This could also mean that if Senator Peeps was to come out opposed to the nomination, then Speaker Lloenflys would have the deciding vote. If either Senator were to come out in support of the nomination, then the necessary 2/3s majority would be reached and Mousebumples' ovation would be confirmed. However, if either Senator were to come out opposed to the nomination then the deciding vote would come down to the remaining undecided Senator.

EuroWeekly has reviewed the current discussion within the Senate surrounding Mousebumples’ Ovation and has ranked each Senator on how likely they are to vote in favour of awarding the Ovation.

EuroWeekly Projection: Too Close to Call

Mousebumples’ Ovation is currently on a razor thin margin, and it is unclear how the Senate may vote. The nomination can survive a single no vote, and until Senator Peeps or Speaker Lloenflys announce how they intend to vote we won’t know if Mousebumples’ nomination can survive that tiny window for error. EuroWeekly will continue to monitor the discussion on the Senate floor and will inform our readers of any major developments.
