The Europeian Scent Shop - Europeian Candle Bestsellers 2024

The Europeian Scent Shop - Europeian Candle Bestsellers 2024
by Expert Scent Huffer @Grea Kriopia

Scent lovers of Europeia,

Have you ever wondered what your fellow citizens smell like? What scents waft through their homes and grace the air while they obsess over NationStates? Look no further. I, Grea Kriopia, Expert Scent Huffer of the Europeian Scent Shop, have surveyed select citizens to publish the Europeian Candle Bestsellers of 2024. This will be the ultimate authoritative list of Europeian scents and smells from 2024 -- What is popular, what citizens identify with, and what you should buy if you want to be more like a certain citizen.

My methodology is simple: I spent weeks wandering Europeia, following leads and floating scents, to track down the most scent-savvy Europeians I could find. Who I found may surprise you but more on that below. Upon approach, I asked these Europeians to tell me what their favorite seasonal candle was and many interpreted this question to identify candles they thought represented themselves. Their responses are recorded below, unedited, for your enjoyment.

Now, onto our Europeian Candle Bestsellers of 2024...

@JayDee - Paddling on the Lake

"I’d probably be “Paddling on the Lake.” I have no idea what it is, I don’t know what any of these scents are, but that one sounds like it would be very soothing. I like the vibes it gives off." - JayDee

Scent Notes: Black Pepper, Cinnamon Bark, Fresh Mint.

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: JayDee was clearly caught unaware when I ambushed him on the street for this question but it's a solid answer nonetheless. Paddling on the Lake is calm and balanced much like JayDee himself and it gives a "just a chill guy" kind of energy. This candle would be good for a lake-side cabin, a chalet in the Alps, or your bathroom.

@Lloenflys - Silver Sage & Pine

"I am cheating a little, because I am picking a Silver Sage & Pine candle which is a bit more of a winter than a fall candle. However, I am doing this because as a Minnesotan, we start winter a bit earlier than most of you all do (usually!) and so snow in the late fall season is quite common. A woodsy scent is a clear winner for me, as I am a rural person far more than an urban one. Despite this, I'm also a homebody ... so something evoking walks in the woods at this time of year would be a bit of wishful thinking on my part. A nice Silver Sage & Pine however just evokes being present in a rural setting, and I can certainly just plunk myself down and exist! A perfect late fall day for me would be curling up with some hot chocolate and reading - and woodsy smells add to the feeling of coziness. The Silver Sage also has a double meeting ... I'm starting to get older and my hair is turning silvery ... and I like to think I'm at least a wannabe Sage. Silver Sage seems to work as a double meaning, then!" - Lloenflys

Scent Notes: Cassis, Clary Sage, Pine

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: Leave it to Lloenflys, purveyor of a Modest Ornithological Proposal, to offer such a nuanced and meaningful response. Silver Sage & Pine offers calming dark green wax with strong pine notes that truly do transport the scent huffer to a deep forest, much like Lloen's own Minnesota. This candle also draws out a unique sense of homeyness that one may unexpectedly feel while in the woods as if you could set up camp next to a river and stay for a while. Would recommend for any wood-heavy home environments, including wood floors, and to pair with many fuzzy blankets.

@GrandfatherClock - Unscented Beeswax Candle
"I would be an unscented beeswax candle because scented candles drive me absolutely nuts, and I do not understand why anyone buys them. Do you all not get headaches? Also, I wear a hat. The hat will kill me eventually." - GrandfatherClock

Scent Notes: None. Maybe honey.

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: GC remains a rare, true ascetic in the world of scents. I was baffled to hear of his existence and knew his denial of scent must be included in this issue. What more is a rebel than denying any smell in the world? Fascinating. GC also earns critical acclaim for his preference for "clean" candles as beeswax burns cleaner compared to other wax alternatives. Consider this candle in a monastery or manifesto-writing environments.

@upc - Balsam and Cedar

"I think I am going to cheat a bit because this may very well be classified as a winter candle, but I am going to go with balsam and cedar. I think that this is such a delightful scent and I enjoy it year-round, although it tends to only be sold in the fall/winter (which means that it is probably time to start stocking up now). Balsam and Cedar, specifically the Yankee Candle variant, has been my favorite candle for as long as I can remember, and I have probably burned through dozens of this candle over the years." - upc

Scent Notes: Crisp Citrus, Herbs, Red Berry

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: upc's pick is true to self and practical, perhaps reflective of a New Englander at heart. Balsam and Cedar is indeed crisp and makes no apologies for making its presence known, comparative to the brusque nature of New Englanders, and as upc mentions is an apt winter-based scent. Pair this candle with Noah Kahan and to impress any flannel-wearing dudes you may know.

@sanjurika - Eucalyptus, Hint of Citrus

"I would be a eucalyptus candle with a hint of orange/citrus. It's a cute combination of the koala avatar I used to use. And the hint of orange for the nickname that the amazing upc has bestowed on me. The color of the wax would be a warm light green, or maybe a light gray." - Sanju

Scent Notes: Leaves, Citrus

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: I was wowed by Sanju's creative response to my question as someone who created their own candle to fit their image -- This is the kind of thinking the scent community needs for the future. Sanju's choice was so "haute scenture" that I couldn't even locate a green eucalyptus candle to emulate this vision. This response further envokes a thought that the scents around you should reflect who you are, opening the door for a world of scents to send mini-messages as others enter your space and engage with them. Thoughtful, artful, and provoking. Pair this candle with a plant-filled living space or offer to it a local koala at the zoo.

@Sarah - WoodWick Wood Smoke Candle

"A WoodWick Wood Smoke candle. The long one that lights up like a little mini fireplace. When it's lit crackles like a real fire. It smells like a fall night by a fireplace. Autumn leaves and a blanket outside by a fireplace. Chilly fall air and a hot chocolate. I am that candle. Cozy and warm with a soft glow of the fire. Drifting off into peacefulness with the crackling sounds." - Sarah

Scent Notes: Amber, Cedar

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: Knowing Sarah for many years, I was delighted to hear such a classic contribution to our 2024 scents. The love of a bonfire or fireplace scene is well known and invokes a very cozy sense of home as Sarah well describes. However, as a scent expert, I'm also picking up on a hint of malevolence in the depths of this Wood Smoke candle. Consider breaking this candle out for arson or a board game night at home.

@Prim - Apple and Cinnamon

"I would be a nice mulled apple cider -- Apple and Cinnamon. Love drinking cider in the fall! Oooo - though that Bath and Body Works "Flannel" looks very nice too. Mahogany, Bergamot and musk -- very nice...", - Prim wanders off into the candle aisle...never to be seen again.

Scent Notes: Warm Apple Brandy, Spiced plum, Tart Cranberry

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: Prim could very well be relied upon to make a "spicy" contribution to this edition even if I had a tough time keeping track of him to answer this question! While Prim may still be lost in the heavens of candle huffing, I cannot fault him for his choice of an Apple and Cinnamon candle. It's got a little zest, a little sweetness, and a nice warm finish. Break this candle out with a glass of dark liquor and perhaps the 5-hour 1995 BBC Miniseries of Pride and Prejudice.

@Kazaman - Afternoon Scrapbooking

"I'll go with 'Afternoon Scrapbooking' because I'm imagining it as the smell of burning paper and I think it's funny to see that marketed as a soothing interior design product. But this is about why I would be that so hmm... I think it's a good metaphor for government crises, being lit on fire while smiling 🙂 But it's also a nice metaphor for secrecy, burning the note after you read it (preferably reading it from an elaborate, tastefully designed scrapbook)." - Kazaman

Scent Notes: Golden Apple, Bergamot, Lemon, Ginger

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: I was astounded by Kaz's response to my question for its ironic nature. Only those living in the shadow of secrecy would pick a candle called Afternoon Scrapbooking and compare it to being lit on fire or perhaps burning classified information. Or perhaps this is an allusion to the softer side of Kaz lesser seen that may or may not involve a scrapbooking hobby? Either way, a bold scent contribution to this edition. Consider pairing this candle with espionage or afternoon tea.

@Lethen - Home Sweet Home

"Well, I narrowed my candles down to three: Bath and Bodyworks Flannel; Home Sweet Home; and Kitchen Spice (the last two from Yankee Candle). Now, I can't smell the scents over the Internet obviously but based on description, I think I am first going to eliminate... Goodbye, Kitchen Spice. So we're down to Home Sweet Home and Flannel. I can't quite get a clear mental/scent picture of flannel. But I feel like I can smell Home Sweet Home, and I like it. So I am Home Sweet Home. - Lethen

Scent Notes: Apple, Cinnamon Spice, Nutmeg

Expert Scent Huffer Observations: Like many who lose their way in the scent world, Lethen's difficulty in narrowing down his choice speaks to his developed scent palate and understanding of smell. I wanted to close our 2024 scents with measured choice and Home Sweet Home is right up there with many of the other apple scents suggested by respondents previously. To be fair, I'm not sure what we can make of this choice coming from someone in New Jersey but we'll allow it. Pair this candle with moving boxes and anywhere but New Jersey.

This was so great! I loved seeing the choices people made and the commentary was also spot on!

Why does it feel like I've said this before ... such an odd sensation of deja vu ...

I could swear I replied to this! Man, had I known how thoughtful others would be... :P

A modest Aromachological proposal
