Sleepy Hollow Weekend Trip: Part 1

Sleepy Hollow Weekend Trip
Part 1

Written by Ellenburg

Sleepy Hollow, New York, has always been on my bucket list. Visiting it in October was just a bonus. Preparation for the trip was surprisingly easy, though. After watching some YouTube videos, you need to order tickets for most things if you are looking to go on tours and events. Only some landmarks were free, and unless you are going for 3 or 4 days, you can’t do everything. With that all prepped weeks before we awaited the time to arrive.

We woke up around 5:30 am on the 12th of October. I checked in on the European presidential election where I was trailing to UPC and Vor then chatted with Cord while I sipped my coffee. We hit the road at about 6 am and had a good 5-hour drive ahead of us. Nothing too exciting happened on the way there we stopped a few times and passed a few places that at some point would like to stop and visit, like the Martin Van Buren National Historical Site in Kinderhook, NY. One plus to the trip is we were heading through the Adirondack Mountains along with many state parks during our drive so the fall foliage was great!

We arrived in Sleepy Hollow at about 11:30 am traffic had not been as bad as anticipated and given that my daughter's boyfriend has a lead foot we made it there in record time. I say traffic was good on the way down but when we got to Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown it was awful and trying to find a parking spot was nearly impossible. We had planned on dining at J.P. Doyles which is supposed to be one of the most haunted restaurants in Sleepy Hollow plus they have some great food. When we arrived there we couldn’t find a parking spot and there was at least a two-hour wait to get in the door. So we spent the next half hour trying to find parking and somewhere for each lunch.

We finally found a place on the Hudson River called Barley on the Hudson. We were hungry and they were not packed so we said why not. I can see why they were not packed after we ordered and ate. Prices were as expected for a tourist town - higher than I would normally pay but whatever I am on vacation. We sat down and enjoyed the view of the water and the Governor Mario Cuomo bridge. Our food came and we started to eat my daughter hated her food and only ate very little of it. I was fine with mine but it really wasn’t great and not worth the money paid but like I said we were hungry and just wanted food. Note to self don’t go back to that place.

Once we got done eating we needed to get to the Sleepy Hollow Cementary for 1:45 pm we figured we would go right there considering traffic and finding a parking spot was going to take time. Luckily at the Cementary, they have lots of parking options we parked on the North side of the Cementary and decided to walk to the South side where our tour would begin. A note as well the Cementary is one of the few places that have restrooms. Even McDonalds in Terrytown/Sleepy Hollow doesn’t as when we were there it was out of order.

The walk over to the South gate took about 10 minutes it was a beautiful sunny day so we all enjoyed the walk. Sleepy Hollow cemetery is huge about 90 acres with 45K buried there! In the next article, I will bring you along as we take the Cementary tour and explore Nyack!
