Pre-Standing Presidential Poll Results

On September 28, the EBC opened our poll, to gauge the approval of various features of the current administration. The poll was closed forty-eight hours later, on September 30. We received twenty-one responses to our fifteen questions, the results of which we will now disclose. As a note, along with each graph, showing the full range of responses, we will also be including the average (or the mean), the mode (the most common response), and the adjusted average (the mean, without 10s or 0s). The EBC believes that the approval numbers represented by the adjusted mean are more representative of the actual opinions of the populace

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of President Kraketopia this term?
Avg: 5.95
Mode: 8
Adjusted Avg: 5.95

This number is roughly where it was last term for Kraketopia, meaning the public's perception has remained consistent. Of the comments included, many cited what appears to be a lack of involvement in his Ministries as the reason for their scores. Should he choose to run again, many voters will likely be concerned over the GAP's slow start, and another round of inactive Ministers.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Vice President Pope Lexus X this term?
Avg: 5.14 (Lowest Avg)
Mode: 7
Adjusted Avg: 5.4 (Lowest Adj Avg)

The Vice-President has never been the most popular part of this ticket, but even so, this score shows the people are not satisfied. Little public activity and not much effort put forth with regard to the CSO are the most likely reasons Lexus received the worst score of the administration.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Grand Admiral Drecq this term?
Avg: 5.6
Mode: 5
Adjusted Avg: 5.6

With Drecq just assuming his role as Grand Admiral, it is not surprising to see his rating where it is. With no actions to really judge him on, most voters stuck with the middle ground in this poll. There is little to read into here.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Foreign Affairs Minister Anumia this term?
Avg: 5.95
Mode: 8
Adjusted Avg: 5.95

After being one of the most popular members of the Cabinet from last term, Anumia's positive image appears to have faded. A lack of communication on Foreign Affairs efforts, FA campaign promises seemingly ignored, and close ties to the president could each explain this downturn in popularity.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Foreign Cultivation Minister Malashaan this term?
Avg: 7.28
Mode: 6
Adjusted Avg: 6.83

Inheriting a failing Ministry halfway through the term is one thing, but the Foreign Cultivation Ministry was a unique challenge for Malashaan. There were demands for reevaluation or even elimination of the Ministry when his predecessor was removed. Malashaan's brief time in office is buoyed by his work ethic and contrasted activity in the Ministry compared to previous FC Ministers.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Interior Minister Mousebumples this term?
Avg: 7.28
Mode: 8
Adj Avg: 7.28

Always a popular citizen, Mousebumples inherited an inactive Ministry halfway through the term, and has not seen much in the way of success, nor failure. The Ministry appears to be more active, but with the lack of results, we can't be too sure. With the Ministry's performance, it is not clear whether these numbers reflect approval for her term, or for her.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Culture Minister Writinglegend this term?
Avg: 8.04 (Highest Avg)
Mode: 9
Adj Avg: 7.84

The only member of the Executive the achieve an average above eight points, Writinglegend has presided over a phenomenal term, full of activity and events, and was recently awarded the "Break-Out Europeian" award to prove it. Easily, he is one of the Cabinet's most popular members, with a wide show of support.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Communication Minister Calvin Coolidge this term?
Avg: 7.85
Mode: 9
Adj Avg: 7.85 (Highest Adj Avg)

It is no surprise Calvin Coolidge has a high average and the highest adjusted average. He inherited a ministry full of doubt and inactivity, and was able to turn it around. With the EBC releasing articles every other week or so, a daily EBC Wire, and frequent dispatches, it is clear this performance has received the voters' stamp of approval.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Attorney General hyanygo this term?
Avg: 6.85
Mode: 8
Adj Avg: 6.8

As usual, hyanygo has an average performance rating. Since the "Best Legal Mind" award was recently awarded to him, these numbers suggest ratings based on personality, rather than performance. His prosecutions of Shin and Zenny were (mistakenly) seen as political witch-hunts by some, which could also have played a role in his rating.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the performance of Chief of Staff r3naissanc3r this term?
Avg: 7.23
Mode: 9
Adj Avg: 7.1

r3n turns in a solid performance score, but, like hyanygo, this is most likely based off personality, rather than performance, as many are unsure what his position has actually accomplished (or is responsible for) this term.

On a scale of 0-10, how successful do you feel the Grand Architecture Project has been this term?
Success of GAP: 4.14
Mode: 8
Adj Avg: 4.57

This term has essentially seen two GAPs. One, overseen by Ogastein, was inactive, and continued to go absolutely nowhere. The other, overseen by Malashaan, has been very active, and is achieving moderate success. This score seems to reflect more of the first GAP, and shows the public will likely be calling for the program to be debated, and possibly scrapped, during the course of the election.

On a scale of 0-10, how would you rate the overall performance of the entire administration?
Administration: 6.28
Mode: 8
Adj Avg: 6.28

Compared to last term, this score is slightly lower. Approval has decreased for many key figures (Kraketopia, Lexus, and Anumia) and been relatively stable for others (hyanygo, r3n). Newcomer Ministers Writinglegend and Calvin Coolidge were the standouts for the Administration, but their successes could not salvage the Administration's overall rating. What this number seems to mostly reflect is that this term was not Kraketopia's best, and will likely be referred to as the worse of his two terms so far.

Do you believe the region is on the right track?
Region is on right track: 61.9%
Region is not: 38.1%

If the election were held today, without knowing any of the candidates, would you reelect President Kraketopia?
Would reelect: 43%
Wouldn't: 57%

Taking these two results together, we see a similar message being sent. The first result seems to be encouraging for the president, with a sizable majority agreeing the region is moving in the right direction, until you consider that almost 40% of the region being against the current path is uncharacteristically high. The second result seems to more strongly suggest that the region is against the incumbent, as a sizable majority would not send him back to the Goldenblock. Should he decide to run for a third term, it seems he will have an uphill battle convincing the voters to give him another chance.

Of the following, who would you like to see as a Presidential candidate in this election?
Leaders: Malashaan (11), Mousebumples (10)

Voters seem to prefer the more experienced, moderate candidates in this hypothetical, signaling a break from the incumbent. Malashaan and Mousebumples lead the pack, with PhDre, and r3n close behind. All of these citizens fit into this narrative, in addition to their collective reputation being that of a workhorse.

In conclusion, this poll's results seem to show the struggle the administration faced this term, and that, looking forward to the next election, the voters want strong, moderate candidates. Whatever the next election brings, the results will likely be interesting, region-altering, and covered by the EBC. Here's hoping for a great election season.

Raw Data

My big question is what sort of "results" are you/the people looking for in Interior? By its very nature, that ministry is much more behind the scenes and results are more seen over the long term rather than in the short term.

Just a minor quibble there (and, seriously, and honest question) - otherwise this is great stuff!

That's really my point. As I mention in the article, the Ministry "has not seen much in the way of success, nor failure." All I am saying is that the only thing people really have to judge the Ministry on is a few public actions. Whether that is the cause of your scores, or the fact that people know you are a hard worker, and have had success in Interior in the past, is not clear. Regardless, I rated you highly, but I also know what Interior is up to.

You mention in a couple places that you're sometimes unsure whether voters are voting according to the performance of the Ministry, or the personality/charisma/experience of the Minister running it. Maybe a way to alleviate this uncertainty in the future is to not frame the question as "How well is Minister ______ doing?" but instead as "How well is the Ministry of ______ doing?" Or have them be two separate questions. I think that Ministry performance is more important than Minister performance, especially when we have cases of Minister turnover (which made the results for Drecq essentially useless). The way you've framed the questions here makes it more likely that some voters would read and respond to the poll as though it were a likability contest.

Or maybe the issue is irrational human desire and it is impossible to separate it rational and just thought? In that case it is impossible to promote a just system of surveying without looking at who is voting :p

I believe even if you word the questions differently the problem will persist. Whether we like it or not, many judge the ministries on who runs them not what they've done.
