Supplemental
January 16th 2020
Readers of the Military Times,
You may have noticed we have added a new series to our article line up. The new series, focused on military technology, ORBATs and organization is expected to see its first article come out within the next few days. But, before we just post the article, I wanted to take a moment to explain the terminology and answer any questions which may or may not come up. If you do have any questions, feel free to ask them below.
For instance, just what the heck is an ORBAT?
An ORBAT is short for the term 'Order of Battle'. An 'Order of Battle' shows or discusses armed force(s) participating in a military operation or campaign shows the hierarchical organization, command structure, strength, disposition of personnel, and equipment of units and formations of the armed force. The term 'ORBAT' is more commonly used by Western armies.
What is a 'White Paper'
A white paper is an authoritative report or guide that informs readers concisely about a complex issue and presents the issuing body's philosophy on the matter. It is meant to help readers understand an issue, solve a problem, or make a decision. Many militaries around the world use a white paper to lay out or explain their reforms or plans to modernize their forces over the next decade.
What does Fifth Generation Fighter mean?
A fifth-generation jet fighter is a jet fighter classification used around the world that encompasses the fighter technologies developed during the first part of the 21st century. As of 2020 these are the most advanced aircraft. The exact characteristics of fifth-generation jet fighters are controversial and vague, with Lockheed Martin defining them as having all-aspect stealth even when armed, low-probability-of-intercept radar (LPIR), high-performance airframes, advanced avionics features, and highly integrated computer systems capable of networking with other elements within the battlespace for situation awareness.
What does Sixth Generation Fighter mean?
A sixth-generation jet fighter is a conceptualized class of fighter aircraft design more advanced than the fifth-generation jet fighters that are currently in service and development. Several countries have announced the development of a sixth-generation aircraft program, including the United States, China, United Kingdom, Russia, Italy, Japan, Germany, Spain, Taiwan and France.
What does 'Force Projection' mean?
Force Projection is a term used in military and political science to refer to the capacity of a state to deploy and sustain forces outside its territory.
What does Blue, Green and Brown Water Navies mean?
A blue-water navy is a maritime force capable of operating globally, essentially across the deep waters of open oceans.
A green-water navy is a maritime force capable of operating within its own waters and economic zones with limited operations in open oceans.
A brown-water navy is a maritime force capable of operating within its own rivers and littoral zones with limited operations beyond.
What does (X) or XX mean in your description of what you're talking about?
(X) or XX means that the name, model, or class of what I am describing or reporting on hasn't been publicly announced yet.
