CSP Elected With No Official Opposition in Senate By-Election
In a by-election held on March 11th, Common-Sense Politics (CSP) was elected to the Senate with 84.4% of the vote and 15.6% voting for Re-Open Elections. CSP will fill the seat vacated by Comfed, who was required to resign due to his appointment as Attorney General.
CSP primarily campaigned on improving levels of democratic engagement and electoral competitiveness, proposing the formation of a Commission on Electoral Innovation & Citizen Engagement to study potential solutions. Upon his election, CSP officially proposed the formation of the commission in the Senate; deliberation is still ongoing.
Peoples' Assembly Passes Resolution on Vote Tracking
In a narrow 10-8 vote, the Peoples' Assembly (PA) passed Resolution 018: On Voter Privacy. Inspired by the failure of the Get a Life Amendment in the Senate (which failed 2-5), the PA passed a resolution reflecting its intent, notably condemning "the practice of attempting to discover the contents of a Europeian citizens' ballot as having no legitimate purpose". While any official barring of vote tracking remains off the books, the passage of the resolution reflects the most official condemnation of the practice to date.
Europeia Celebrates Adulthood on Founding Day
On March 6th, Europeia celebrated its 18th anniversary as a region. In accordance with the Holiday Act, President Grea Kriopia presided over the opening of Founding Day festivities, including notable speeches from the region's founder, HEM, and from former President and current Minister of Radio Sopo. Minister of Culture Spuzz City (Rai) also put together several activities throughout the event, including a cake design contest that concluded yesterday, with Maowi overwhelmingly winning the final vote. Happy Birthday, Europeia.
