Chaos in The Wellspring
Automation Strikes Again

Chaos reigned briefly in The Wellspring this Wednesday following NationStates Technical Moderator United Calanworie's announcement that several nations belonging to the player known as 9003 had been deleted. The disgraced nations included 9003, the player's longtime primary nation, as well as The Warden of the Spring, The Wellspring's governor, and 9006, the region's delegate and sole successor. These deletions left The Wellspring defenseless, less than six months after The Wellspring transitioned to a stronghold for security reasons. It is not yet clear why no other successor was appointed.

According to United Calanworie, 9003's nations were deleted due to the player's creation and use of a script to automatically open trading card packs. NationStates administrators were first made aware of the script through a technical forum post by 9003, who was reportedly fully cooperative with the investigation. According to data provided by 9003, approximately 15,000 trading card packs, yielding roughly 75,000 cards in total, were processed with the illegal tool. Site admins ultimately concluded that the script fell under category 3C -- illegal HTML bots -- which is NationStates' most severe scripting violation. Due to this and the complexity of tracing transactions across the cards minigame, it was ruled that deleting 9003's primary nations was the best way to mitigate the damage.

With a likely raider jump imminent, the Modern Gameplay Compact worked with its allies and what remained of The Wellspring's government in order to secure the region's delegacy. By major update on Wednesday, less than 7 hours after the initial announcement of the deletions, regional administrator Well-Sprung Jack was able to secure the seat with over 100 endorsements. A statement from the interim government yesterday indicates that Well-Sprung Jack will be appointed as the region's governor, while Councilor of World Assembly Affairs Pasxo will serve as delegate.

Generational failings in region-management and this article is rather kind all things considered. Why 9003 didn't appoint a successor, let alone once he knew he was being investigated, is beyond me.

The Wellspring narrowly avoided destruction by raiders in 2024 because of defender intervention - despite their best efforts to continue putting themselves at risk. I remember pointing out that a lot of nations were above the endorsement cap (some of which were later proven to be raider sleepers) and 9003's response was to just raise the cap so they weren't technically violating it. Towards the end of their time as a Frontier they did not have a single WA-locked security officer, either.

This article is also pretty gracious in that it doesn't mention how certain, most likely self-interested agitators (John Laurens) attempted to defame the MGC/allied intervention as an "invasion" because we said we would only pile on a vetted, known native and not some unvetted candidate of the "government's" choosing.

I do hope they get it together if they want to continue on as a region, which they seem to... but sheesh thus far.

Crazy self-report.

Sad to see Europeian citizens accusing us of acting as an invading force as well.

Not sure which current citizen you're referring to
