Comfed Narrowly Defeats Peeps in By-Election
Written by United Vietussia
In a race that came down to the final few hours and voters, Comfed defeated Peeps in Monday's by-election to fill Calvin Coolidge's seat. The race was deadlocked for much of the voting period, but Comfed secured the last few voters to pull away with a narrow majority at 52.6%, capturing 30 of the 57 voters.
Turnout in this election also reached a historic high, with 57 voters casting a ballot in the by-election. This is the highest for a non-Presidential election since this past January's general Senate election and is the highest turnout in a by-election since May 2024, when a runoff between Olde Delaware and Gem drew 58 voters. Both candidates lauded the turnout in the election and expressed optimism about the level of engagement in the electorate during their post-campaign remarks.
Despite his loss, Peeps hinted at a potential return in a statement following the election, noting, "I wouldn’t be shocked if you all hear from me again relatively soon." With the next general election just over 3 weeks away, Peeps' strong performance in the by-election may set him up to campaign for a full term in the near future. When approached by the EBC for comment regarding his statement, Peeps said that a future run was "certainly something under consideration".
Comfed will now enter the Senate with a little under 25 days left on the term, just over two months after resigning from the 98th Senate to serve as Attorney General.
