[Beyond The Borders] Diplomatic Crisis Hits Democratic Socialist Assembly

Diplomatic Crisis Hits Democratic Socialist Assembly
Two Major Embassies to be Closed

Written by Lime

(Europeia - September 18, 2020) - The Communist Bloc and The Leftist Assembly have both closed their embassies with the Democratic Socialist Assembly, shaking up the political left of NationStates and further isolating the region within the larger NationStates world. With 991 and 531 nations respectively, The Communist Bloc and The Leftist Assembly are both large regions and prominent members of NSLeft, an alliance of left-wing regions across NationStates. The Democratic Socialist Assembly is a far smaller region at 251 nations and exited the NSLeft alliance in May this year.

The Democratic Socialist Assembly's Cabinet proposed withdrawing from the alliance to Congress, which narrowly voted in favour 50 percent to 44 percent, with 6 percent abstaining. Those in favour of leaving argued that NSLeft no longer benefited the region, and several members strongly disapproved of NSLeft allowing authoritarian regions and members to be a part of the alliance. They argued that those who believed in authoritarian beliefs regardless of their left-wing economic views could not be considered “true” members of the political left. Privately, many also believed that the breakdown of relations between the Democratic Socialist Assembly and The Internationale (a member of NSLeft) a year ago was also a reason for the region voting to leave. The growing isolationist policy coming from the Democratic Socialist Assembly, along with growing resentment from members of its community towards those with authoritarian views, was already frosting their relationship with other left-wing regions, however it was their actions in recent days which prompted the decision by The Communist Bloc and The Leftist Assembly.

The Democratic Socialist Assembly Minister of Justice Liossalde, announced to their Court that he had conducted an investigation into three prominent members of the NSLeft community “to investigate a claim that had to do with some patterns of clique behaviour.” To do this, Liossalde placed a new puppet nation in the Social Liberal Union (NSLeft member) and also created a separate Discord account to access a resident only channel. There Liossalde alleges he found references from Courelli, Ramelia, and Goncar, the three members he was investigating, which “demonstrate a pattern of hypocrisy and pharisaism, to the extent of violating the Terms of Residency and the clause of Extraordinary Misconduct extensively” that they “mock most of the active people of DSA” and “speak with derogatoriness and disdain for our region itself.” He provided a list of logs as evidence for the alleged occurrences. Sharing his alleged findings with the wider mod team, collectively they recommended to the Court that Courelli, Ramelia, and Goncar were permanently removed from the region. The Court accepted this recommendation and banned the three members, with their nations being ejected form the region.

The Leftist Assembly in a statement made by their newly elected Secretary General Kavagrad on September 15, described the evidence presented as being extremely flimsy and argued that it was gained through acts of espionage against their allies in the Social Liberal Union. Kavagrad continued, saying that the Democratic Socialist Assembly while defending their actions “made further slanderous assertions” against Courelli, Ramelia, and Goncar “without presenting a shred of evidence” and slammed the judgement made by “their kangaroo court's High Judge.” His statement concluded by saying that the Democratic Socialist Assembly had “a long history of purging those that are critical of their way of doing things, as well as a long history of sectarianism.” This, would be unacceptable for any embassy partner of The Leftist Assembly and as such called for the end of the embassy between The Leftist Assembly and the Democratic Socialist Assembly. Following a two day discussion period and with no opposition, the Secretary General ordered the closure of the embassy.

After following the developments, The Communist Bloc released a statement on September 17, signed by their First Minister Egaleca and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nathaniel Kuznetsov-Penrose. In it they described the trial as a “facsimile of justice, and a drumhead trial to embolden the sectarian ideology and the animosity towards the NSLeft that has taken root in the DSA.” They continued, described the evidence used against the three prominent NSLeft members as “a feeble attempt to fit a specific narrative created by the DSA government surrounding so-called 'tankies', 'authoritarians', and 'the NSLeft clique' " which was not related to nor proved the guilt of the three members of their alleged crimes. They also slammed the acquisition of the evidence used in the trial saying it was “gained through blatant espionage of a foreign power” towards a region The Communist Bloc considers a close friend and ally.

The Communist Bloc statement continued describing the actions of the Democratic Socialist Assembly towards the Social Liberal Union as "hostile” and “aggressive” and raised concern over a “growing anti-communist, anti-Marxist, and toxic sectarianism developing within [the Democratic Socialist Assembly].” The First Minister and Foreign Minister made clear their belief that the Democratic Socialist Assembly only allows a “narrow set of ideologies and political opinions as 'correct' ” and that The Communist Bloc cannot be allies with such a region. They announced the immediate closure of The Communist Bloc's embassy with the Democratic Socialist Assembly, although will allow ambassadors from the region to retain their privileges and they will be allowed to stay within their boarders. The statement also made clear that they do not wish hostilities between the Democratic Socialist Assembly and The Communist Bloc but that their actions forced a strong response.

Following the closure of The Leftist Assembly’s and The Communist Bloc’s embassies with the Democratic Socialist Assembly, Anarchy will be the only member region of NSLeft who will retain an embassy with the Democratic Socialist Assembly. While Anarchy is yet to make a statement on recent events, after the closure of The Leftist Assembly and The Communist Bloc embassies just four regions will have embassies with the Democratic Socialist Assembly. It is unknown if these four remaining regions will take any action against the Democratic Socialist Assembly, however it is clear that the Democratic Socialist Assembly will live in a far more isolated world, both through their own choice and as a consequence for their policies and actions.

I was in DSA for some time last year (2019) and I can definitely attest that it was becoming quite toxic. I'm not surprised this happened after all the issues with NSLeft they created, and the kangaroo court is just the icing on the cake. What a shame...

From my own personal viewpoint this is quite clearly DSA's fault. Many of the players seemed very toxic and extremist in the sense that they would only accept their own world view as "correct" and anyone else who had a different view was wrong or even evil. The "evidence" used in the "trial" was clearly gained through espionage and the "trial" was clearly any thing but fair. Given all that, the shutting of embassies seems the least TCB and TLA could have done. I think even stronger action would have been appropriate.
