Award Show Analysis

The Europeian Achievement Awards Show begins September 15, but before then, the EBC wanted to inform our readers about what they might want to expect in terms of pros and cons, past award shows, with the thoughts of our panel sprinkled throughout.

To begin, we all know that there are certain things an award show is supposed to do (show tasteful sideboob) and certain things an award show is not supposed to to do (not show tasteful sideboob). To help clarify this list of dos and don'ts, the EBC panel offered up a handy list. Minister of Culture Writinglegend says a good thing about award shows is that they, "recognize people for their hard work when they otherwise may not be recognized". Assemblyman Shin weighs in, "It's a fantastic opportunity to drum up community involvement in the current affairs of Europeia, as well as demonstrate to newcomers that quality work is recognized." Minister of Communications Calvin Coolidge added, "Not even just newcomers, but old-timers who we sometimes forget about." Finally, Assemblyman modernsin says, "they're a good way for us to collectively recognize the merits of citizens who are more 'social' than 'political.'" You got that? Award Shows are amazing tools of awesomeness because they essentially remind everyone how great they are, and that their contributions to the region are appreciated. You can't get that just anywhere.

Now, obviously Award Shows are not all rainbows and cleavage. There are a few downsides that Award Shows present, which our panel will now elaborate on. Calvin Coolidge starts us off with, "a potential harm is that people may feel discouraged if they don't win, particularly if they are a member who has been working very hard, but fails to get recognized in either the nominations or the awards." modernsin added, "it potentially increases competitiveness between some citizens, and it kinda inherently comes with the baggage of making value judgments in certain areas." Now don't you feel awful for supporting Award Shows in the last paragraph? People get sad, and feel like their contributions have been overlooked, if an Award Show is not careful. And trying to get an Award Show to be careful is like performing heart surgery with a sledgehammer: first incredibly comical, then blood everywhere, and you get thrown in jail for malpractice. There's no way around it, right?

Wrong. Our panel discussed how an Award Show can balance its pros and cons to put on a good Award Show. Shin reminds us, "There's always going to be winners in an award show, but I would argue that what is being done by culture is not about picking winners and losers, but ultimately about recognizing contributions to our community." President Kraketopia chimes in, "it's a good social event, and recognizes achievements... as long as it's done right, the harms are minimized." There we go, then. Just keep in mind that people know when things aren't supposed to hurt. Events like this are usually done in good fun, and people can adjust their reactions accordingly. So, is it going to hurt if you get nominated for no awards, while someone much newer and less talented (such as Calvin Coolidge, perhaps :p ) sweeps the categories? Probably, but just remember the words of this panel, as well as to take out your anger on a panda voodoo doll, and things will work out.

After getting this far in the article, and just by being around in this region, you've probably noticed that this is not Europeia's first award show. In fact, Europeia has had award shows since 2008, and they have come a long way since. We asked our panel what they look for in an award show, to have a measuring stick to compare earlier award shows with this one. Writinglegend says, "Excitement. Something that makes me want to actually participate." Kraketopia rattles off, "Good buzz, good award selection, good choices, and finally, good reasoning for the choices." modernsin said simply, "Comprehensiveness. Europeia has a pretty heterogenous and varying culture, and the breadth and creativeness of the show's categories should reflect that."

With these in mind, let's look at some of the first award show's categories and winners. Just glancing at some of the 2008 categories, many of them seem rather hurtful, with names like, "The Most Pathetic Former Citizen", "The Most Overrated Member", and "The Most Animal-Like Member". And the ones that aren't hurtful have nothing to do with accomplishments of any kind, such as "Member Most Likley to Be Rich!" or "The Most Inactive-Sorta Semi Active Member'" So, right of the bat, it seems apparent that the goal of the first award show was less about honoring contributions, and more about random awards and mockery. Despite these odd categories, however, they did also have the ever-popular "The Most Underrated Member" and the ultimate prize, "The BEST Member" (by the way, HEM was the winner of that last award). What does this little jaunt down memory lane show us? Well, nothing, if we don't compare to the present, thus showing how far we have come. Almost none of the same categories have survived the test of time, but new, kinder, awards have taken their place. In the Award Show from April of this year, some categories included, "Best Journalist", "Most Creative", and "Best Attitude". Clearly, the focus has shifted to a more congratulatory tone, rather than one of mockery. A few categories that were in both include, "Most Popular" and "Most Promising Newcomer".

Now that we have been armed with this knowledge of Award Shows, we can hopefully go into this event a little more informed, prepared, and ready to party in the name of good, clean fun. Again, the Award Show jointly hosted by the Ministries of Culture and Communications will begin September 15, and we hope that all citizens of Europeia will take part in this exciting part of our region.
