96th's Senate End-of-Term Poll Results [November 2024]

Senate End-of-Term Satisfaction Poll [November 2024]
Results and Analysis

Written by Amalteia and Vor

Introduction:

This analysis uses the Sincluda model of net approval, calculated using the following method: “Don’t know” answers are factored out, “satisfied” answers add points, “dissatisfied” answers subtract points. “Very dis/satisfied” answers are counted the same as normal “dis/satisfied”. “Net approval” is therefore lower than traditional approval ratings, though you can view these for yourself in the charts. Net approval ratings are rounded to the nearest 5%. This poll concerns the 96th Senate i.e. the previous Senate.

Representativeness:

The last Senate election had 54 voters. This poll got responses from 22 Europeian citizens. That means that this sample represents ~40% of the Senate voter base. The EBC therefore warns all readers that due to the use of voluntary response sampling, this poll could have relatively low representativeness, and actual voter base opinion could significantly differ from this overview. A qualitative analysis is advised.

Overall Senate Satisfaction: +60% net approval
  • Some of their legislation seems like it's a solution in search of a problem or a solution to a previous mistake some of these Senators made last term

The 96th Senate scores a 60% net approval rating. This is an effective 3% increase from last term’s polling result of 57%. One comment opines that much of the Senate's activity was searching for problems and amending previous mistakes.

Speaker Cordova I: +20% net approval
  • He is a good speaker. Sounded like personal health issues were taking their toll which is understandable because that could happen to anybody.
  • Seemed to not be staying up with discussions or to always follow the SPA
  • He messaged me soo..<3

Cordova I obtains a low net approval rating of +20%. Whilst feedback laud his abilities as speaker, they also raise concerns related to his levels of activity. Unfortunately, due to personal health issues, Cordova I has been unable to keep up with discussions and follow the SPA to an appropriate standard. On behalf of the EBC, wishes of health are sent to Cordova I.

Senator Caldrasa: -40% net approval

Caldrasa has received the lowest net approval of any Senator, and is the only Senator to have earned a negative rating, with a -40%. There are no comments on Caldrasa’s performance, which would indicate broad dissatisfaction with activity and/or quality rather than a policy-specific disagreement.

Senator Sopo: +90% net approval

Yet again, Sopo entertains a high approval rating, without a single dissatisfied vote, and nearly gaining a significant 20% approval increase from the last poll, securing a +90% net approval. There are no comments detailing Sopo’s seemingly stellar performance.

Senator Lloenflys: +95% net approval

Lloenflys achieves a crushing net approval of +95%, with a remarkable 27% of the voter base describing themselves as “Very Satisfied” with his work. Again, no comments are offered

Senator Rand: +70% net approval

Whilst Rand’s net approval has decreased by 10% compared to the last poll, he gathers a solid +70% net approval, with half of the voter base expressing they feel “Satisfied” with his toil last term.

Issues:

We will now be looking at several proposed bills. Please note that since this concerns the end-of-term of last term, the status and opinions on proposed legislation is likely to have changed significantly.

Run-Off Improvement Act (2024) : +80% net approval
  • The issue this bill solves should probably have been noticed before the bill passed and not after, but I'm glad the senate fixed it

The “Run-Off Improvement Act” leaves the voter base satisfied, and has consequently a net approval of +80%. Nevertheless, a multifaceted comment states that the bill addresses issues that needed noticing before the bill’s passing, and not after, but that overall, it was a good thing that the Senate solved this.

Tabling Simplification Amendment Act (2024): +70% net approval

The “Tabling Simplification Amendment Act” encounters good support from the voters, with a +70% net approval.

Multiple Seat Senators: +50% net approval
  • Why was this even a thing?
  • Pointless

“Multiple Seat Senators” receives +50% net approval. Two comments indicate perplexion in respect of the ultimate objective of this proposed legislation. A high degree of Neutral votes likely indicate apathy regarding the proposal.

Elections Act (2024): +40% net approval

The "Elections Act" garners moderate backing, with a net approval of +40%. The act’s reception could suggest a cautious acceptance of Approval Voting.

Substitute Rollback Amendment Act (2024): +75% net approval

The "Substitute Rollback Amendment Act" sees strong endorsement, securing +75% net approval. This indicates satisfaction with the effort to restore the relevancy of Senate substitutes through limited powers.

Legislative Counsel Act (2024): +60% net approval

The "Legislative Counsel Act" gains steady support, earning +60% net approval. This indicates people favour the inclusion of a member of the region's Bar Association to check and advise on legal matters in the Senate.

Revising the Legislative Counsel's Power Amendment Act (2024): +60% net approval

The "Revising the Legislative Counsel's Power Amendment Act" receives an overall favorable reception, achieving +60% net approval but amongst many Neutral votes. Senator Lloenflys presented the issue as follows: "
The section that I am concerned about reads as follows:

FO1. (2) Unless a more specific rule exists, the Legislative Counsel will be presumed to have standing to initiate any judicial proceeding affecting the Senate, the Senate Clerk, the Speaker of the Senate, or the People's Assembly.

This is sort of a halfway position between giving the Legislative Counsel only the powers of a staffer, on the one hand, and creating what is effectively a "Legislative Branch Attorney General," on the other hand. I have not considered whether empower a full-fledged legislative branch AG would be a good idea or not, but I think this half-way measure is inappropriate." He in turn proposed to remove the power of the Legislative Council to initiate legal proceedings.

Delegacy Nomination Amendment Act (2024): +60% net approval
  • should be repealed

The "Delegacy Nomination Amendment Act (2024)" achieves +60% net approval, suggesting solid approval for the limitation placed on (Vice) Presidents that prevents them from nominating themselves (but not renominating themselves if they already held the office) for World Assembly Delegate of Europeia. Notwithstanding, one comment declares that it should be repealed, and two respondents voted 'very dissatisfied' on this question.

Abolishment of the Circuit Court: -5% net approval
  • Would have liked to see it explored in more depth, glad it's back

The handling of "Abolishment of the Circuit Court" faces important disfavor, reflected in a negative -5% net approval. The proposal appears divisive, possibly due to concerns over the (low) speed at which the proposal has been handled so far. A comment notes that it could be explored in more depth, but that it is a positive thing for the community to have this bill return.

Another Assembly Legislative Harmonisation Act (2024): +40% net approval

The "Another Assembly Legislative Harmonisation Act" receives a reserved reception, with a massive 40% of respondents voting 'Neutral'. The proposal came from the People's Assembly and concerns that same body, fixing "inconsistencies regarding the PA Chair election and term duration." Given the simplicity of the bill, it's likely the neutral votes simply indicate apathy rather than mixed feelings or moderate concern.
