2019 Europeian of the Year Nomination: The Venerable Drecq
Military Times Special Report
Feb 14th 2020

“Two qualities are indispensable: first, an intellect that, even in the darkest hour, retains some glimmerings of the inner light which leads to truth; and second, the courage to follow this faint light wherever it may lead.” - Carl von Clausewitz

The first face you might see when you enter discord as a new citizen isn't the Administrator who pings your name to the masses and announces you. It isn't the heaps of new people, future rivals and good friends. It is usually a name standing alone all in purple at the very top of the page. A member of the Chancellery, our region's depository of its institutional memory.

Drecq.

The ever present Vice Supreme Chancellor. The longtime Senate Speaker. One of the region's most feared and skilled debaters. The legal juggernaut who is only rivaled by Malashaan and Onderkelkia. Truly, to define Drecq by just his titles and accomplishments would only give you one look into his personality. In this day in age when you must be more active socially rather than politically to achieve your aims in Europeia, Drecq has effortlessly positioned himself in both arenas allowing him full control of his destiny and his goals like few others have

We saw this come to the forefront during the renewed debate over compulsory recruiting. Some of the Region's younger members saw for the first time the vigor and the confidence that once elevated Drecq to the role of Elder Statesman in his defense of the then majority position against it. Using precious little of his political capital and instead turning to what he has in abundance, his wit and his quick and encyclopedic knowledge of our region's history to turn dissenters into doubters.

We had a chance to see Drecq's vaunted legal skills in action as he deftly and swiftly afforded the accused, the disgraced Minister of Recruitment Bri Shakespeare a swift trial in accordance with our region's laws by presenting his case quickly and fairly against the Venerable Malashaan. While the case ended up being overshadowed by the controversial decision by Mr. Justice Rand, it wasn't hard to see why so many of our region's Presidents and subsequently Chief's of State select him as our region's Attorney General.

Many of us newer citizens had never had the chance to see Drecq in action, coming to Europeia well after his glory days of the middle part of the 2010's. So it would come down to fate that the last year of the decade was our best chance to see why the region has held Drecq in such high regard and has granted onto him its highest honors. 2019 was a year that did not disappoint in may ways, from the highest highs to the lowest lows. It was also a year where a region called on its best and brightest once again to serve her in her time of need and where Drecq answered the call and did his duty swiftly, surely and quietly as the quiet professional he is.

It is because of this that the Military Times is proud to announce it has nominated Drecq for the 2019 Europeian of the Year award.

Another outstanding nomination - the region simply would not be the same without Drecq!

Drecq is certainly one of the most consistent Europeians, and so it's hard for him to have an outstanding year when the baseline is already so high. But this was, indeed, an outstanding year for Drecq. We are lucky to have him.

Drecq absolutely deserves this nomination. The impact he has made in the last year alone has been an absolute gold mine of contributions to Europeia. I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of interviewing him in 2019, and overall I can't think of anyone else that wields their political power with such a balance of strength and grace. Well written OD.

Eh, Drecq's okay I guess
