Signature size policy and recommendations

The administrative team has adopted the following policies and recommendations regarding forum signatures

Size limits

Current forum policy limits both the maximum height and maximum width of signatures.

Because the skins of our forum are designed to be resize-able, and because the forum dynamically rescales images, signatures have different heights and widths depending on the size of the monitor or browser window the forum is viewed under. As a result, the permissible maximum height of a signature needs to be defined relative to forum width, and for a fixed scaling of images.

For this reason, the maximum permissible size for signatures is set to 330 pixels height and 670 pixels width, when viewing the forum at a resolution where the main section of the forum has a horizontal width of 870 pixels, and when all unspoilered images in the signature are viewed in their original size without scaling by the forum.

You can easily determine whether a signature is within the permissible limit by following these steps:
1) Switch to the skin "Euro signature test". This is a skin created specifically for the purposes of checking signature sizes and should not be used otherwise.
2) Check the size of the signature in a post made by the respective member.
3) If the signature is taller than the following image, then it is violating the signature height limit.

4) If the signature causes the forum to appear stretched, then it is violating the signature width limit.

Signature recommendations

1) If you are planning to create an image to be used in forum signatures, especially a popular image such as an award or an advertisement, please consider making it smaller than 75 x 400 pixels (height x width).
2) If an image you want to use in your signature is available through the image repository, prefer to link it from there instead of some other location. If it is not available in the image repository, consider making a request in that thread that it be added to the repository.
3) If you use a collage of several images in your signature, consider compiling them into a single, large image file.
4) Recommendations 3 and 4 contradict each other to some extent. Which one is appropriate can only be determined on a case-by-case basis, but it generally depends on the number of images you have in your signature and on how many of them are available in the image repository.
5) You can considerably increase the content of your signature while staying within the size limits by using spoilers. Use of the SPOILER is generally encouraged, and you can find instructions on how to use it here. However, please be mindful of the fact that content hidden under a spoiler still has to be loaded every time someone accesses a page that shows your signature, even if they do not expand the spoiler. Hiding a thousand images under a spoiler is definitely discouraged.

Enforcement

Administrators will take the following steps when they notice a signature violating the size limits described above:
1) The signature will be edited to be placed under a spoiler tag in its entirely.
2) A warning PM about the violation will be sent to the member in question.

Recommendations are not enforced, though administrators may PM members recommending compliance.

If you notice any signatures violating size limits, you can report them in this thread.
