Constitutional Convention Gets Down to Business

On January 28th, the Senate passed the Constitutional Convention Resolution, officially starting the 2024 Constitutional Convention. This decision would settle a month-long discussion on the reasoning behind such a convention, and as the convention unfolds, may change the dynamics of Europeia as a whole in the future.

The idea of holding a convention was first suggested by McEntire in her Senate campaigns, first in April 2023, then in July, in which she recommended a convention to better adapt Europeia for its new position as a Frontier, where she seemed to not face much, if any at all, backlash against this move. This idea of calling for a convention was further strengthened in a November EBC Poll with 25 respondents, where 56% of respondents voted in favor for a constitutional convention, and 68% in favor of a Constitutional Convention Act, signaling a majority of citizens supportive of an eventual convention.

On November 11th, a vote in the People's Assembly passed the Constitutional Convention Act onto the senate with a decisive 10 votes in favor of the act, while only having 3 votes in opposition. Amongst the senate, then-Senator Lloenflys was quick to point out the seemingly unchecked power of the Chair, with then-Senators Forilian and Elio also concerned about the Chair's power. This prompted Rand to propose a bill limiting the power of the Chair, but after a hard-fought debate with McEntire about several issues on the rules of the convention, Rand further redrafted the act to fit in line with McEntire's suggestions. With this final amendment, the bill was unanimously passed 5-0 and sent to President JayDee.
Shortly after the approval of the President, McEntire proposed the Constitutional Convention Resolution, which looked to call a Constitutional Convention to better adjust the Europeian Government after the monumental changes following the conversion to a Frontier. Among other aspects of the government, the resolution seeked to address the role and responsibilities of:
  • The Delegacy
  • The Head of State
  • The Executive Government
  • Legislative Authority
  • Europeia Gameside and the Regional Security Council
  • The Judiciary
With large-scale support from multiple senators, the resolution was passed on to a vote. Ultimately, on January 28th, following a vote in the Senate with 4 votes in favor, while only with 1 against, the Constitutional Convention Resolution was passed, and on February 2nd, the Convention officially commenced.
