Effective immediately, both ‘XIV’ and ‘Ninja Kittens’ are banned indefinitely from Europeia’s forum and all off-site communications platforms.
Both of these accounts were controlled by the same user, and neither accounts were honest about who they truly were. For ease of reference, we will refer to this user going forward as ‘Jackson’.
So the story goes, Ninja Kittens joined our region in the summer of 2014. In that time she was a fairly successful player, even once almost becoming President of the region. In summer of 2016, however, she approached Administrator Lethen with a conundrum. A disabled friend wanted to play Nationstates, but as he was in the same apartment complex, they might share IP addresses. With a much more naive administrative team than the one that operates today, we agreed to the exception. This member, of course, was XIV. Both members were Jackson.
XIV joined and moved this region multiple times with his stories of disability and recovery from trauma. The support given to him was commendable, and representative of the very best of Europeia. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no evidence that any of it is true.
We traced Ninja Kitten’s email address to a male Facebook account that almost certainly belongs to Jackson. Because of the perfect IP Address overlap between Ninja Kittens and XIV during the time both accounts were active, we can approach certitude that this Facebook user (Jackson) that traces back to the Ninja Kittens zetaboards account is both Ninja Kittens and XIV. Jackson is not disabled, did not suffer a catastrophic car crash, was not brought back to health by a stay at home nurse who gave him the confidence to move his limbs again, etc.
Far more concerning: after extensive administrative investigations we have found that ‘Ninja Kittens’ is based off a real person, who actually exists, that we shall refer to as Jane Doe. Jackson was using Jane Doe, with whom he was a friend of on Facebook, as a model for the Ninja Kittens persona. The vast majority of all life details, and the entirety of all provided photos, belonged to Jane Doe. When we reached out to Jane Doe on Facebook she was understandably concerned about someone posing as her on the internet, and all photos of her that could immediately be found have been removed from our site.
To be perfectly clear: Jane Doe had exact photos that had been posted on our forum under the Ninja Kittens account. Many of the mundane details of her life were spot on—though the emotionally manipulative stories (purported stabbing, coma, estrangement from fiance, traveling the world after fatal health diagnosis) seem to be fictionalized. However, Jane Doe had never heard of Nationstates much less our community within.
For transparency, there is division in the administrative team about whether the misrepresentation of life details—even to a chronic degree—is actionable. We do not currently have any complainants from within our community, making this offense very different from the Brunhilde/Fitzgerald ban. We have no evidence that Ninja Kittens/XIV used their deception to manipulate sexual exchanges from other users. However, the incredible breach of privacy to steal someone else’s identity and pose as them on the internet for the purposes of misleading others is unacceptable and puts our members at risk.
Jackson adopted large parts of the story of a real life Facebook friend. A real life story that appears to have little in common with his true identity. He created not one but two fake identities, and created fake events to garner sympathy. While we do not expect everyone to reveal details of their real life identities (in fact, we often counsel against it), the degree of deception and willingness to invade the privacy of a real life acquaintance raises additional concerns. Based on his past behavior, the admin team cannot say with confidence that Jackson will not commit other deceptive acts that may cause harm to members of this community. Until such a time that we are convinced he does not represent a threat, his presence in the community represents an unacceptable risk.
Finally, I can only emphasize for the umpteenth time to treat your identity and your “self” with caution. Europeia is a warm, loving place, however too many people, too many times, have attempted to take advantage of that. Be safe.
