Ye Olde Time Rivalries

I often have to read the magazine Foreign Policy for Political Science. It's pretty interesting and different from what I'm used to reading. One of the things it focuses on, which other papers do not is foreign policy and foreign relations. It's often looking at what happens through the lense of Foreign Affairs. For example, this weekend I've read a very good article on Libya's relationship with Italy and an interview/article on Libya's defected ambassador in the United States Ali Aujali and what he's pushing for. Really cool stuff (to me at least) and that's what I'm hoping to focus more on.

This issue is going to be about TUK's relationship with NBE and UK. The next issue will focus on a modern and ongoing relationship. I decided to write this one because it's very familiar to me. Thinking about Europeia and TKR for the next one. So here it is:

TUK-NBE Relations

The United Kingdom was an old region founded four years ago by King George, aka Conservative UK. It's story can be summed up as a struggle between those who favoured a stronger Monarchy and those who favoured a more Constitutional and Democratic system. The former 300+ region died in the last struggle between King George and his opponents.

The New Britannian was revived in 2010 by Emperor Konstantin with a constitution that made the Royal family immune to the law and gave Konstantin supreme power. The United Kingdoms previous King, Sephion IV had abdicated and the scandal (him using his Monarch Intervention to delete Nivogal and South Boston Irishmen from the forums) resulted in Monarch reforms in the region. So it wasn't a surprise that he defected to NBE and became the Crown Prince, nor was it a surprise that a rivalry was born with rumours that King George had tried to annex NBE in the past.

There were a few new guard members that were involved with both regions and there would be flare ups between the regions. TUKers getting banned randomly or get their maskings switched suddenly. It was also thought that New Britiannian Empire was home to the porn spammers who had attacked TUK. There were whispers of war, the closest being when Willem van Oranje accused Harold Vorn of selling TUK out because he agreed in NBE that they should end their relationship with TUK.

The result was Vorn being destroyed politically for the time being and Willem both destroying his political super party and choosing not to run in the next election. Vorn had been the Deputy for the Lexus of TUK, Sir Reg Empey in the previous two terms. He had looked to be the next Prime Minister of The United Kingdom, ironically with Willem as his deputy. TUK's relationship with NBE ended that. There was a wave of anti-NBEism, it was the worst thing you could be. Without Vorn and WvO dropping out, I wouldn't have run. Strange that another region could change what happened in another.

Things eventually cooled down with the status quo of no relations. There were attempts by individuals to normalize relations between the regions but the leaders in both regions agreed that it was for the best. This status quo was ratified in a msn convo in a midnight between myself, PASD, Nivogal (who had been pushing Konstantin for it), Konstantin and Konstantins new son Rougiers. It would hold until the end of TUK. This however did not stop members such as Harold Vorn, William Bettingham and South Boston Irishmen from becoming successful in both regions.

TUK-UK Relations

UK was never mentioned in TUK and we never had relations with them at all until after their forums had been destroyed by Pietro. It was very wierd. There were many old big time TUKers there who had retired from UK, so it was a kind of... "we don't talk about it" relationship. They were a rival, but an unspoken one.

Interesting...not as in-depth as I would have hoped, but interesting. Europeia should be a tough write for this.

Thanks Lethen, but more in-depth? I actually thought it would be too in depth and boring. Europeia will be much more difficult given that I'm not a big part of it. TUK is easy for me to go in depth because I know it and you guys don't (to a large degree). If I do Europeia, most of you guys know the stories I need to look up and to a greater degree.

Given that I'll probally go back to my strong suit and write about the AC/Forum Destruction/Porn Spammer Summer and Fall from my perspective then.

Yes...I can see a ton of avenues you could go down for Europeia, but it would be a pain in the ass for someone like you who knows none of it. :p
